There is something special about summer on the farm.
The gardens are overflowing, the bees are working from sunrise to sunset, and every day seems to bring a new harvest basket into the kitchen. As the seasons change, our routines naturally shift too. We spend more time outside, eat more fresh foods, and find ourselves moving at a different pace than we do during the colder months.
Over the years, I've learned that summer wellness doesn't have to be complicated. In fact, some of the most impactful things we can do for our health are often the simplest. Sunshine, fresh food, movement, hydration, rest, and time outdoors all play an important role in supporting our bodies.
At Whispering Willow Farm, we focus on creating simple rhythms that help us feel our best without chasing perfection. If you're looking for a place to start, these are the practices I return to every summer.
Start With the Basics
When people ask me where to begin, I always encourage them to focus on the foundations first. Before adding supplements, protocols, or complicated routines, make sure the basics are in place.
A few simple habits can make a tremendous difference:
- Start your morning with water before coffee.
- Spend a few minutes outside in the sunlight.
- Prioritize protein at meals.
- Eat seasonal fruits and vegetables daily.
- Include fermented foods regularly.
- Move your body every day.
- Protect your sleep.
- Make time for rest and connection.
These habits may seem simple, but consistency with the basics often creates the biggest results.
Eat With the Season
One of my favorite things about summer is how naturally the garden provides exactly what our bodies need during the hottest months of the year.
Cooling, hydrating foods become abundant just when we need them most. Watermelon, cucumbers, berries, tomatoes, herbs, and leafy greens are staples in our kitchen all season long. Not only are they delicious, but they also provide hydration, minerals, antioxidants, and fiber that support digestion and overall wellness.
Some of my favorite summer foods include:
- Watermelon
- Cucumbers
- Tomatoes
- Berries
- Leafy greens
- Fresh herbs
- Peppers
- Summer squash
- Citrus fruits
The closer we eat to the season, the easier it becomes to nourish our bodies with what they naturally need.

Support Your Digestion
If you've followed me for any length of time, you know how strongly I believe that gut health impacts nearly every area of wellness.
Digestion influences nutrient absorption, energy levels, immune function, inflammation, and even mood. Summer is actually one of my favorite times to support digestion because fresh foods are so readily available.
A few simple ways I focus on digestive health during summer include:
- Eating protein at every meal.
- Increasing fiber gradually through whole foods.
- Including fermented foods daily.
- Drinking plenty of water.
- Walking after meals.
- Eating slowly and mindfully.
You don't need a complicated gut protocol to support digestion. Often, returning to real food and simple habits can be incredibly effective.
Hydration Matters More Than You Think
Summer heat can quickly deplete both fluids and minerals, which is why I think about hydration as more than simply drinking water.
Along with water, I love incorporating:
- Coconut water
- Fresh lemon water
- Electrolytes
- Mineral-rich smoothies
- Herbal teas
- Hydrating fruits and vegetables
One of my favorite summer smoothies combines greens, cucumber, lemon, coconut water, ginger, and a pinch of mineral salt. It's simple, refreshing, and a great way to support both hydration and digestion.

Natural Summer First Aid Staples
With more time spent outdoors comes more opportunities for scrapes, bug bites, sun exposure, and other minor summer mishaps.
Over the years, I've found myself reaching for many of the same natural remedies again and again. So much so I created a herbal first aide E-book you can download and get started right away.
Some of my favorite summer first-aid staples include:
- Calendula
- Raw honey
- Aloe vera
- Plantain
- Witch hazel
- Bentonite clay
- Activated charcoal
- Oatmeal
- Lavender
Calendula is probably one of the hardest-working herbs in our garden. We use it in salves, oils, and herbal preparations throughout the year, but especially during summer when skin support becomes a regular need.
Having a few trusted herbal remedies on hand can help you feel more prepared and confident throughout the season.
Don't Forget the Power of Rest
One thing I think many of us overlook is that wellness isn't only about what we eat or what supplements we take.
Sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is slow down.
Spend time outside without a purpose.
Watch the bees work in the garden.
Take a walk after dinner.
Sit on the porch with a cup of tea.
Let your nervous system rest.
Nature has a way of reminding us that everything doesn't have to happen at once. The garden grows one day at a time, and so do we.
A Simple Summer Wellness Checklist
If you're feeling overwhelmed, start here:

You don't have to do everything perfectly. Small, consistent choices add up over time.

From My Farm to Yours
Every year, summer reminds me that wellness doesn't have to be complicated. Some of the best things we can do for our health are the same things our grandparents likely did every day—eat nourishing food, spend time outside, work with our hands, rest when we're tired, and stay connected to the rhythms of the season.
My hope is that this guide encourages you to simplify, slow down, and embrace the beauty of summer wellness in a way that feels sustainable for you and your family.
From our farm to yours, I hope your summer is filled with sunshine, good food, thriving gardens, busy bees, and plenty of moments that remind you to pause and enjoy the season.
