Today I'm thrilled to share with you one of my favorite techniques for extending the vase life of tulips: harvesting them with bulbs intact and storing them in the refrigerator. This method has revolutionized how I manage my tulip harvest, allowing me to enjoy fresh blooms for weeks on end. Before we dive into the process, let's talk timing.
Now, let's get down to business. When harvesting your tulips, aim to keep the bulbs intact. This preserves their life force and extends their freshness. Simply grasp the stem near the bulb and gently pull to remove it from the soil. Voila! You've got a tulip ready for storage.
Next comes the storing process. I typically use craft paper or pre-made bouquet sleeves to wrap my tulips, ensuring they're snug and protected during refrigeration. Remember, no water is needed at this stage. The goal is to keep the bulbs intact and the blooms closed until they're ready for arrangements.
Once wrapped, it's time to find a cozy spot in the refrigerator. Ideally, maintain a temperature between 35 to 37°F to keep the tulips chilled. Lay them flat or, if you prefer, use tall buckets to keep them upright. I've found that upright storage helps maintain the integrity of the stems and petals, resulting in better-looking blooms when it's time to revive them.
At Whispering Willow Farm, we utilize a converted deep freeze as our tulip cooler. This makeshift cooler accommodates multiple buckets, allowing us to organize our harvest efficiently. With this setup, we're able to maintain a consistent temperature and ensure our tulips stay fresh until they're ready for arrangements. Speaking of arrangements, storing tulips with bulbs intact opens up a world of possibilities. Whether you're preparing for deliveries, events, or simply want to enjoy fresh tulips at home, this method simplifies the process and extends the lifespan of your blooms.
Harvesting and storing tulips with bulbs intact is a straightforward yet effective technique for prolonging the beauty of these beloved flowers. With a bit of care and the right storage conditions, you can enjoy vibrant tulips for weeks on end. Stay tuned for part two, where I'll share tips on reviving stored tulips for arrangements. Until then, happy harvesting!
